For a variety of reasons, the podcasts for this year will not be going ahead. I am sad because there were lots of plans...more videos...more international students...employers...makeover programmes but, as the US Marines says; 'these things happen'.
However, it is worth reflecting on where we've been. Lots of interviews with international students, advice from Learning Support and other support staff, insights from Caledonian students about 'best practices' sat alongside Radio Caley interviews, the guys and gals ( young and old ) from the Arc. Through this simple blog, Facebook and Twitter, we got over 2500 hits. The university's official site ( see above ) got more than that, according to Mr Saltire Centre - Tom Finnigan.
To me the lessons are clear. New media is the way to engage and engage is the way to new media. Talking into a mic or a camera isn't enough. Students and staff need to be persuaded to tell their stories. I was fortunate enough to get some great stories, some fantastic voices and valuable insights from students talking to students. But, it's easy with enthusiastic people and everyone I met was.
Finally, there was one insight which convinces me this approach is right. In an interview with Frank Brown, he offered this sage observation; "Students listen to staff, but they believe students." I think he's on to something, you know.
